Moving from a compressed format to a lossless one
Converting a JPG to PNG places the image in a container without destructive compression, but doesn’t recover detail already lost during the original JPG compression: the resulting PNG’s sharpness is capped by the quality of the source JPG.
Adding transparency isn’t automatic
PNG supports transparency, but a JPG never contains any: the conversion produces a PNG with the same opaque background as the original image. Cutting out a subject to get a transparent background requires a separate background-removal tool.
