    Why iPhone photos won’t open everywhere

    Since iOS 11, the iPhone saves photos as HEIC by default — smaller than JPG at equal quality, but poorly supported outside Apple’s ecosystem. Windows without an extra codec, many upload forms, photo printers, and older Android phones either reject these files or display them incorrectly, which is why converting them back to the universally readable JPG format is so common.

    For a Live Photo, only the still frame is converted to JPG — not the 1-2 second video portion attached to it. For burst shots exported individually from the iPhone, each HEIC file is processed on its own.
